Club Championships
Enjoy a bit of friendly competition with your club mates.
What it's all about
The Club Champs generates some friendly competition between our members. The aim is to get as many 'championship' points as possible during the year. You do this by taking part in races on the club champs fixture list. Most of the races are local, so you'll get massive support from your club mates.
The list includes a variety of road races, trail runs and track events, with distances from 5K to 20 miles. You could even run a marathon that counts towards your score.
Fixtures
How do you score points?
There are about 12 races in each half of the year. Each championship race has 30 points on offer, with the first AAC man and woman getting 30 points each. We then allocate the remaining points until the last AAC runner finishes. After that, every member who completes the race will get at least one point.
You can run as many club champs races as you want. However, only your five highest-scoring races in each half will count towards your final score.
Anyone can win
You don't have to be the fastest runner to win a prize, competing in lots of races gives you a good chance.
Some of the tougher races may only have a few AAC members running, so are a good place to pick up points. You could get 30 points just for finishing!
To win the champs, you must run:
a minimum of six races in the year
at least one in each half of the year.
Sign up for races as soon as you can; popular events sell out fast.
Prizes
We award prizes at the annual awards evening in January.
Overall Championships
Overall Men's Club Championships winner (man with most points)
Overall Women's Club Championships winner (woman with most points)
Age group
There are prizes in each age group for men and women. The groups for men are senior men, M40, M50, M60, M70, and M80. For women, they are senior women, W35, W45, W55 and W65.
The overall winners can't also win their age group prize. Instead, it goes to second place in the category.
Other prizes
There are prizes for the men and women under 20 age category. They only need four races in the year to win, with at least one in each half of the year.
There is also a prize for the man or woman who completes the most races from the calendar.
The rules
On race day, you must be a paid-up member and wear a club vest or t-shirt except for parkruns, track events, marathons and the Pud Run.
Your age on 1 January determines your age group for the whole year.
Oxfordshire Grand Prix Series
We include Oxfordshire Grand Prix races (except the Abingdon Marathon) as an incentive for club members.
Oxfordshire Athletics has organised the Oxfordshire Grand Prix Series since 2002. The competition sees most Oxfordshire Clubs compete against each other in a series of 14 road races over various distances.
Team competition
In a grand prix race, the first four runners for each club score. The teams are awarded points according to their position on a sliding scale (first 25 points, second 22 points, third 20 points, fourth 19 points, fifth 18 points and so on). The best 12 results from the 14 races in the series count towards the teams' overall score.
Individual competition
Finishers are awarded a point for every other Oxon club runner that they beat. All 14 races in the series count towards the runner's overall score, so the more races completed, the more points you will score.
Suggest a race
Our Championship Co-ordinator, Mark Lewy, is always open to suggestions for possible races to include the following year. He tries to include the smaller races organised by our fellow Oxfordshire clubs as without our support; they won’t happen. The cross country and Mota-vation races are on the calendar to encourage runners to participate in the whole series.
Use the contact form on this page if you want to make any suggestions or have questions about the Club Championships.
