Race Report: Alchester Summer 5k

The flat, two lap course of the Alchester Summer 5k lends itself to one thing and one thing only: speed. And despite the relatively hot, sunny summer evening and a delayed start due to traffic, all entrants took advantage of this fact. Not only was a new course record of 15:29 set by Witney Road Runners Matthew Lock (obviously), but the Abingdon runners in the pack cleaned up. Paul Fernandez, Sarah Rendell and Jane Fabes all came 1st in their categories (MV40, FV45 and FV65, respectively), Mark Lewy was 2nd MV60 and James Wigmore and Patricia Wilson came 3rd in their categories (MV70 and FV65, respectively).

Becks Compton finished 4th FV45 and Steve Badcock Was 5th MV60. To top it all off Joe Evans-Murray, Paul Fernandez and Cameron Weir claimed the Men’s Team prize for AAC. It’s safe to say the majority of our runners finished this event with a noteworthy performance including yours truly who recorded a season’s best 5k (even if that season hasn’t included much running) and Julian Moore who produced his fastest 5k in 8 years. If you want to really see how fast you can go, earmark this race for next year.
